One thing worth mentioning that few people understand is that American firms are now making so many parts for Kalashnikovs and have developed such an expertise with their construction that it would only be a matter of months, at most, before domestic manufacturers began offering AK-pattern rifles made entirely in the US, if their importation was banned. The only reason they're not making them now, is the fact that they can't compete with foreign manufacturers on price. The quality, they've pretty much got nailed down already.
All of this has a great practical impact upon the future of gun control efforts here in the US. As Americans continue to invest in the weapons that gun prohibitionists are most keen to take away from them, the trenches get dug deeper by the day. There are ways to show respect for gun owners and those who fear guns in civilian hands. There are ways to strike a balance. And we really should be trying to strike that balance instead of blindly stiking at each other.
